Stephen Docherty leaves Pollok FC

Pollok FC has confirmed that forward Stephen Docherty has left the club after his contract expired.

Stephen, known as “Doc,” joined Pollok in the summer of 2022. In his first season, he scored five goals.

During the following season, he spent four months on loan at Gartcairn before returning to Pollok and finishing the season with twelve goals. He ended the most recent season with ten goals, highlighted by a memorable hat-trick away to Drumchapel United in April. Overall, over three seasons, Doc scored 27 goals in 85 competitive appearances.

Doc was a very popular member of the squad and built a strong connection with the fans. The club has expressed its thanks for his hard work and contributions over the years and wishes him all the best for the future.

The announcement of his departure has sparked a lively discussion among fans on the club’s Facebook page. One post by Danie Mcglade asked, “What’s going on behind the scenes? How many players haven’t signed new contracts? There’s no way they all wanted to leave at one time.” In response, another fan, Tyrone Rattery, suggested that there might be some ongoing issues behind closed doors, noting that “with the way all of our best players are leaving, it’s going to be a long season ahead – looks like it’s going to be all the youth playing next season.”

Danie Mcglade pressed for more transparency from the club, stating, “I just wish the club would be a little transparent. There are obviously problems happening behind the scenes with so many players leaving on running contracts. We couldn’t persuade one to stay through the good and the bad, so speak to us.” Tyrone agreed, expressing that it would be helpful to have a club statement on what was going on.

Other fans shared their thoughts as well. Stephen Scobie pointed out optimistically, “They’ve reconnected with the academy so things are looking up,” while Kenny Doak lamented the loss of another experienced player, adding, “Disappointing to have another experienced player leave us. Best wishes, Doc, and thanks for your efforts. It’ll be tough for the new season – I think the emphasis will be on youth.”

In a lighter vein, Gordon Catlow joked about his age in relation to the upcoming season, asking, “I’ve got arthritis in my knees, and I am 67 – should I bring my TOTAL 90’s when I come to watch the pre-season in case there aren’t enough players for a bounce game?” Tyrone replied humorously that, “I’m 38 – I will bring my football boots just in case.” Stephen Scobie rounded off the discussion by wishing Doc good luck.

While Doc’s departure marks the end of his impactful period at Pollok FC, the conversation among fans highlights a growing concern about behind-the-scenes changes within the squad. With several experienced players leaving and are calling for greater transparency regarding player contracts and future plans.
