St Mirren were hoping for a win against Hearts to take them into the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup – and after 90 minutes, extra time and penalties, the Saints got their hard-fought victory.
The game was fairly even, but it was St Mirren who created the better chances in the first half. In the 34th minute, Alex Grgic opened the scoring with an acrobatic scissor kick low into the Hearts net.
Half time: St Mirren 1–0 Hearts.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Hearts enjoying plenty of possession but St Mirren continuing to threaten more in attack. However, in the 78th minute Hearts finally levelled when McEntee headed in from a corner.
Full time: St Mirren 1–1 Hearts.
Extra time saw both sides push for a winner, but with no further goals the match went to penalties. Of the 10 spot kicks taken, it was Hearts number 10, Braga, who missed – Saints’ goalkeeper diving low to his left to save.
Final score: St Mirren 1–1 Hearts (St Mirren win 5–4 on penalties).
