Rangers’ Europa League campaign is hanging by the thinnest of threads after a damaging collapse in Budapest, where Ferencváros came from behind to take all three points and leave Philippe Clement’s side staring at an early exit. Rangers actually struck first, and with their only meaningful attempt of the opening hour. Bojan Miovski produced a superb acrobatic finish on 27 minutes after Danilo’s blocked effort broke kindly in the box. The flag initially went up, but VAR confirmed the striker was just onside. His celebration in front of the home ultras made the moment even sweeter. That, remarkably, was the high point of the night. Ferencváros had caused problems from the first whistle, repeatedly slicing through a hesitant Rangers back line. Bamidele Yusuf passed up three big openings inside half an hour, and Jack Butland survived a shaky moment when he spilled a corner straight into traffic and Toon Raemaekers poked narrowly wide. The warning signs were there, and Rangers didn’t heed them. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Ferencváros levelled. A pullback into the box found Bence Otvos, whose effort took a slight touch off Nasser Djiga before nestling in the corner. It was a dreadful time to concede and shifted the momentum entirely. Rangers’ defending after the interval didn’t improve. Within two minutes of the restart the back line was scrambling again, and although Djiga produced several excellent recovery tackles, the structure around him looked increasingly desperate. The introduction of Mikey Moore and Dujon Sterling briefly injected energy, but Ferencváros were the side building pressure. The decisive goal arrived on 72 minutes, and Rangers could have no complaints. Callum O’Dowda floated a cross to the back post and Barnabás Varga — completely unmarked — powered home a brilliant header for his 20th goal of a prolific season. Clement shuffled the bench again, but the team created almost nothing as the clock ticked down. Curtis came closest when he forced David Grof into a superb save, palming the shot round the post, but Rangers never looked like finding an equaliser during the sluggish closing stages. By full-time, Ferencváros were in full celebration mode — and Rangers were left knowing the outcome was entirely self-inflicted. A night of slack defending, minimal threat in attack, and another nail driven into a European campaign that is rapidly slipping away.
