WoSFL weekend: Burgh and Renfrew advance in cup, Thorn lose in league and St Peter’s fight back

Johnstone Burgh were in cup action at the weekend and turned on the style with a convincing 4-0 win at home to Greenock Juniors. Blair Rossiter opened the scoring after 28 minutes, before Aaron Mason and Max Kerr struck twice in quick succession midway through the second half. Ian McShane wrapped it up late on to complete a dominant performance.

Burgh said on socials, said: “We’re growing in confidence every week and the boys were clinical when it mattered. The attitude was spot on.”

Renfrew were also involved in the Scottish Communities Cup and are through to the next round after a 2-1 victory away to Arthurlie, who likewise featured in cup competition. Kieran Healy headed in at the back post before half time, and Aiden Malcolm’s free kick doubled the lead shortly after the restart. Arthurlie captain Michael MacNeil pulled one back near the end, but Renfrew saw the game out with composure to secure their place in round four.

A Renfrew FC spokesperson said: “It was a proper cup tie and we took our chances at the right times. The boys showed a lot of character.”

It was league business for Thorn Athletic, but they suffered a tough afternoon with a 2-0 defeat away to Maybole Juniors. Liam Miller and Connan Makin scored the goals for the hosts, and Thorn admitted afterwards it was a disappointing performance. Despite missing players through injury and suspension, the club said they “didn’t deserve anything from the game” but will regroup over their two-week break before facing Maybole again in the cup on November 1. Thorn sit sixth in the Second Division table on 15 points, while Bellshill Athletic lead the way on 27.

Before kick-off, the Thorn camp said: “We’ve still got a few players missing through injury and suspension, but this gives others a chance to step up with big games coming.”

After the defeat, they added: “We didn’t deserve anything from the game and need to be better. We’ll reset and go again after the break.”

Maybole boss George Wallace said: “The boys played very well and stuck to the plan. We felt comfortable throughout and probably should have scored more with the chances we created.”

St Peter’s were also on league duty and came from behind to claim an impressive 3-1 win away to Campbeltown Pupils. The hosts scored first, but Max Devine levelled before half time. Devine added a second after the restart and Danny Sinclair sealed the points in the second half.

Manager Scott Carlin said: “It wasn’t our best performance by a long shot, but the boys fought till the final whistle and got what they deserved. That says a lot about this group. Max was outstanding and fully deserved man of the match.”

No Glenvale news as they had the weekend off.

In East Renfrewshire, Arthurlie’s result is already covered through their cup tie with Renfrew. St Cadoc’s were in Premier Division action and had a day to forget as they lost 5-0 away to Kilwinning Rangers. Giffnock SC enjoyed a more positive outing with a 5-1 win over Lochee Harp.
