Johnstone Burgh grabbed a dramatic late win at Barrfields after a 96th-minute penalty from Blair Rossiter sealed a 2–1 victory against Largs Thistle.
Burgh started the match well and forced two early saves from Largs keeper O’Connor, first from a Lewis King header on six minutes and then a long-range strike from Darren Christie. The pressure paid off midway through the half when a free-kick into the box was headed on by King, and Danny O’Neill reacted quickest to tap in from close range to make it 1–0.
Largs pushed back late in the half but Burgh defended strongly and held their lead at the break.
The home side came out firing in the second half and levelled the match on 49 minutes when Jamie Martin volleyed in at the back post after a cross from the right. Burgh responded with chances of their own as Rossiter tested the keeper twice and Aidan Gilmartin sent a shot over from a good position after smart play from Aaron Mason.
Largs almost took the lead with five minutes left when a deflected effort came back off the post, before Burgh were reduced to ten men in the 88th minute when Malky McDonald was shown a straight red card after a strong challenge.
Despite the setback, Burgh kept pushing. Deep into added time, a corner led to a goal-line scramble and the referee awarded a penalty. After a long delay, Rossiter kept his nerve and fired the spot-kick into the right-hand corner with what proved to be the final kick of the match.
