St Mirren progressed to the last 16 of the cup with a 2–1 win against group leaders Ayr United.
The Saints got off to a flying start when Killian Phillips opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing off a fine team move. They continued to dominate and doubled their lead in the 38th minute, Phillips again finding the net from a pinpoint pass by Roland Idowu.
At half-time the score stood at 2–0 to St Mirren.
The second half saw Ayr United improve on their first-half performance, and they pulled one back in the 65th minute when Kevin Holt headed home. The visitors threatened to level but failed to create any clear-cut chances, while St Mirren spurned two gilt-edged opportunities of their own: Mikael Mandron fired high over the bar, and late in the game Mark O’Hara curled a shot wide.
Final score: St Mirren 2–1 Ayr United.
St Mirren begin their league campaign next Sunday when they travel to Celtic Park to face Celtic.
